The Google Antitrust Conundrum amid Rising U.S.-China Trade Tensions

Bu, Q. — IAS-UM6P / University of Sussex

Abstract

China’s antitrust investigation into Google’s Android operating system is examined as both a competition law matter and a geopolitical instrument in the broader U.S.-China trade conflict. Bu argues that while greater oversight of tech multinationals is vital for fair competition, the politicisation of economic regulation and pan-national-security conceptualisation risk distorting markets and undermining genuine innovation. The article maps the potential outcomes for Chinese firms, global market integration, and the future architecture of digital trade governance — a timely contribution at the intersection of technology law and international relations.
