Prof. Abad Chabbi

Biography
Prof. Abad Chabbi is a Research Director, plant ecologist, and soil biogeochemist specializing in biogeochemical cycles under climate and land-use change. His work integrates advanced science, large-scale research infrastructures, and science-policy interfaces to address global sustainability challenges related to soil resilience, carbon dynamics, biodiversity, and climate adaptation.
He has held research and teaching positions in the United States, Germany, and France, and has led since 2009 a national long-term observatory on Agro-Ecosystems, Biogeochemical Cycles, and Biodiversity at INRAE. He has coordinated major European research infrastructures and projects, including ExpeER and AnaEE, and contributes to international expert groups for FAO/IAEA and other global organizations.
Author of more than 180 scientific publications, Prof. Chabbi has supervised 25 PhD students and postdoctoral researchers and holds visiting professorships in China and Chile.

Residency at IAS UM6P
At the Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS) at UM6P, Prof. Abad Chabbi’s residency supports the implementation of his project, “Advancing Soil Organic Matter Research and Sustainable Agroecosystem Management for Climate Resilience in Morocco.”
During his residency, he collaborates closely with teams in the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences to strengthen research partnerships, build institutional capacity, and foster interdisciplinary integration. His engagement also contributes, where relevant, to the One Health initiative and the Center for Applied Systems Analysis (CASA), promoting systems-based approaches that connect soil processes, environmental resilience, and broader societal transitions.
