White Paper of Transitions 2024

Raphaël Liogier et Marouane Jaouat

In the rapidly evolving landscape of global change, the concept of transitions has become a cornerstone for understanding the multifaceted shifts occurring across ecological, social, scientific, and technological spheres. The University Mohammed VI Polytechnic (UM6P) has, through its annual event Science Week, consistently provided a platform for dissecting and discussing these pivotal transformations. This year, the 4th edition of Science Week, hosted by the newly inaugurated Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS) and under the scientific direction of Prof. Raphaël Liogier, focuses on the theme of «Transitions.» This theme is not only a continuation of the rich dialogues fostered in previous years but also a deep dive into the profound shifts reshaping our understanding of the world, significantly guided by the insights and research of the newly established Chair of Transitions at the IAS.

The Chair of Transitions represents a cornerstone of the IAS, embodying the commitment to delve into the myriad forms and meanings of transitions affecting our world. From ecological sustainability and economic circularity to the philosophical inquiries about states of reality, the Chair aims to unpack the layers of each transition phase society encounters.

This white paper, inspired by the dialogues and discourses of Science Week, seeks to extend the work of the Chair by providing a comprehensive analysis of transitions in multiple domains. The theme «Transitions» resonates with the critical challenges humanity faces today—challenges that compel both the scientific community and the global populace to rethink current paradigms and envision novel approaches to sustainable development and societal advancement, offering a pathway to reconfigure our relationship with the world in more harmonious and sustainable ways.

This white paper aims to encapsulate the essence of these discussions, exploring the multifaceted nature of transitions as they pertain to the natural and human sciences. Each chapter delves into different dimensions of transitions, from the scientific mysteries surrounding the states of reality and their transformations to the socio-political shifts enabling communities around the globe, particularly in Africa, to redefine their futures.

In this pivotal era, where every shift counts and every understanding contributes to the larger mosaic of human knowledge, this white paper seeks to not only narrate but also critically analyze the transitions

that are defining the 21st century. By integrating empirical research and conceptual analysis, the insights gathered here strive to contribute to a broader comprehension of the dynamics at play and inspire actionable solutions tailored to the needs and aspirations of a rapidly changing world.

As we stand on the precipice of these vast changes, let us embark on this intellectual journey with openness, curiosity, and a commitment to understanding the transitions that define our times, paving the way for a future that transcends traditional boundaries and sets new paradigms for generations to come. We pay special homage to Daniel Dennett, whose participation in the last Science Week left a lasting legacy. His pioneering thoughts and philosophical rigor have inspired many, shaping our approach to this year’s theme. Daniel’s untimely departure a few months after his contribution reminds us of the profound impact one visionary mind can have on the collective quest for knowledge. His spirit of inquiry and dedication to understanding human cognition and reality continue to influence our discussions and endeavors.
