Story, Science & Society
About this Event
On April 3, 2025, the Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS) at UM6P hosted the final conference of Dr. Wale Okediran, marking the conclusion of his residency. The event offered a reflective and multidisciplinary perspective on the intersections between literature, medicine, and politics, under the title “The Tripod of Literature, Medicine & Politics.”
A renowned Nigerian author, physician, and cultural leader, Dr. Okediran drew on his unique career spanning multiple fields to explore how storytelling can serve as a bridge between scientific knowledge and societal realities. His lecture highlighted the role of literature not only as a form of artistic expression, but also as a powerful tool for understanding human experience, shaping public discourse, and informing policy.
Central to his intervention was the idea that medicine and politics, often viewed as technical or institutional domains, are deeply intertwined with narratives—stories that define how societies perceive health, identity, and collective futures. By bringing these dimensions together, Dr. Okediran proposed a more holistic approach to knowledge, grounded in both analytical rigor and human empathy.
The event also featured a preview of a student travel writing anthology, developed as part of a workshop led by Dr. Okediran during his residency. This collaborative project showcased the voices and perspectives of students, reflecting on journeys, cultures, and lived experiences through narrative writing.
The session concluded with an engaging exchange with the audience, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary dialogue and creative practices in addressing complex societal challenges.
Through this closing conference, IAS once again highlighted the value of crossing boundaries between disciplines, reaffirming its commitment to fostering spaces where science, arts, and society intersect to generate new forms of understanding.
