The Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS) – UM6P hosted the end-of-residency seminar of Dr. Tomas Veloz in the Ibn Tofail Room at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University.

Entitled An Interdisciplinary Journey Around Applied Mathematics, the seminar offered an overview of the rich body of modeling work developed by Dr. Veloz during his residency at the IAS. His presentation spanned a wide range of domains, including computation theory, epidemiology, ecology, collective intelligence, social dynamics, and emerging epistemological frameworks for science and education.

Since joining the IAS in July, Dr. Veloz—an interdisciplinary scientist from Chile working at the intersection of physics, mathematics, cognitive sciences, and complex systems—has explored questions ranging from epidemiological modeling and conflict dynamics to reaction networks, goal-directedness, and emergence. His work also engaged with broader reflections on knowledge, agency, and the evolving role of education in contemporary societies.

The seminar combined rigorous mathematical and computational modeling with a deeply reflective and human-centered perspective on interdisciplinarity and learning. Several of the projects presented during the talk are now moving toward publication, and Dr. Veloz’s residency has contributed to strengthening international collaborations between the IAS–UM6P, the Centre Leo Apostel (VUB), and other partner institutions.

The IAS warmly thanks Dr. Tomas Veloz for his scientific contributions, his intellectual generosity, and the inspiring momentum he leaves within the IAS community.
